Drama Therapy public lecture and workshop – Robert Landy

The Gordon Institute for Performing and Creative Arts (GIPCA), in partnership with Drama for Life, will host a public lecture and workshop by Drama Therapy pioneer, Professor Robert J. Landy. The lecture will take place on Friday 30 August, and the workshop on Saturday 31 August, both at Hiddngh Hall, UCT Hiddingh Campus.

Landy’s public lecture titled “Performance Healing”, will be followed by “Drama Therapy in Clinical Practice” – a specialised Drama Therapy workshop open Arts Therapists, Psychologists, Social Workers, Educational Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and other health care professionals, as well as Applied Drama and Theatre Facilitators/Educators, and students in the above mentioned fields.

Robert J. Landy is Professor of Educational Theatre and Applied Psychology, and Director of the Drama Therapy Program at New York University. As a drama therapist, he has more than 35 years of clinical experience, having treated children and adults with a wide range of psychiatric, cognitive and adjustment challenges. A pioneer in the profession of Drama Therapy, Landy lectures and trains professionals internationally.

Landy has published and produced numerous books, articles, films and plays in the fields of Drama, Drama Therapy, Musical Theatre and related topics. His 2008 book The Couch and the Stage: Integrating Words and Action in Psychotherapy examined the relationship between psychotherapy and Drama Therapy.  His 2012 book  (with David Montgomery), Theatre for Change: Education, Social Action, Therapy, examines the relationship between Drama Therapy and applied forms of theatre. An award-winning educator and researcher, he has been cited, reviewed and interviewed in numerous publications including The New York Times, The Village Voice, and The Los Angeles Times.

Robert J. Landy is hosted by Drama for Life at Wits University on the occasion of the international Distinguished Scholar Programme of the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC). The Distinguished Scholar Programme offers a more open system of scholarly communication worldwide, enhances academic knowledge and intensifies high-level research networks. For this, outstanding scholars and Nobel Laureates in particular areas of strategic focus, are invited to work with selected universities.

The specialised Drama Therapy workshop, “Drama Therapy in Clinical Practice”, will be presented on Saturday 31 August from 09:00 – 13:00 at Hiddingh Hall. This workshop is open to registered HPCSA Arts Therapists, Psychologists, Social Workers, Educational Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and other health care professionals; as well as experienced Drama and Theatre Facilitators/Educators. Students in the abovementioned fields, as well as those studying Drama and Psychology at a 3rd year or Honours level may also apply. Contact odwa.jenkins@wits.ac.za with full name, ID number, HPCSA registration number/student number and field of experience/study by Thursday 22 August to apply. 25 participants will be selected. The workshop registration fee is R500 (R250 for students); payment instructions to follow on selection. Participants will receive CPD credits for attendance.
